Himel Bros. Leather
Illustration, Graphic Design
Key Takeaways
I have a great eye for composition.
I can draw and paint.
I'm comfortable doing funky, gritty design as well as clean corporate work.
Himel Bros. is a heritage clothing brand that makes extremely high-quality, high-end bespoke leather jackets. The sewing shop uses only 1930s and 40s all-mechanical sewing machines, the leather is mostly Japanese Shinki horsehide, and the thread used is era-matched 100% cotton Guttermann (if you are not a leather jacket aficionado, please trust that this is very impressive).
I was a do-everything generalist marketer, art director, and designer there for four years. After two years, I was promoted to General Manager and took on operations management for the sewing shop.

These ads ran in "Men's File" magazine, a prestigious Japanese fashion quarterly.

These magazine ads (above) are the only pieces of my work to be published in Japan.
The ad on the left ran in an issue of the highly prestigious menswear quarterly "Men's File." The ad on the right was rejected for being too racy.
Layout, typography, and graphics by me. Art direction by Himel Bros.
This is a digital painting I made for a poster, released in print alongside a special limited-edition motorcycle jacket.
I'm displaying it small here, because its an unmanageably large image, but the print poster is four feet tall.

Thanks again for modeling, Matt.

These tees are the all-time bestseller at Himel Bros.
I've designed hundreds of apparel graphics in the last ten years, but these "Cry Wolf" tees are my favorite. I think the weird scale and almost crude graphic style really captures military art and handicrafts from the 30s and 40s.

These are some of the hundreds of illustrations I made for Himel Bros. over the course of the four years I spent full-time there.
It's important to the client for all the graphics to feel like they're coherently from the same brand identity, but correspond to slightly different decades and media. I achieved this look by using a wide variety of different paper textures and print effects, giving their branded materials a "collaged together" aesthetic.
